Kalyegira made the disclosure days after securing bail in a case in which he faces charges related to allegedly operating media platforms without the required licences.
The journalist had reportedly disappeared on June 26 after being picked up by security operatives, prompting concern among family members, lawyers, journalists and human rights activists who questioned his whereabouts for several days.
He later resurfaced before the Kira Chief Magistrate's Court where prosecutors charged him with offences under the Uganda Communications Act relating to the operation of online media platforms.
Kalyegira denied the charges and was subsequently remanded to Luzira Prison before later being granted bail.
However, it was his account of events surrounding his detention that attracted the most public attention.
