President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has publicly weighed in on the prolonged legal proceedings involving veteran opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye, arguing that the delays in the case have been caused largely by legal objections and procedural challenges raised by the defence.
Speaking on the matter, Museveni rejected suggestions that the government was responsible for the slow pace of the proceedings, insisting that Uganda's courts are capable of handling cases efficiently when parties allow the judicial process to run its course.
"Take the case of Dr Besigye. He was arrested on November 17, 2024. It has been almost two years now. All this time, however, he has been refusing trial and misusing the legal system," Museveni said.
The President argued that some defendants have increasingly turned to procedural applications and constitutional challenges that, in his view, prolong cases instead of helping courts determine guilt or innocence.
According to Museveni, courts are established to hear evidence, evaluate facts and deliver judgments based on the law rather than becoming trapped in endless legal disputes over procedure.
"His case would have ended long ago if the trial had proceeded normally," the President added. Continue Reading............
