A new chapter has emerged in Uganda's long-running political and legal confrontation involving opposition veteran Dr. Kizza Besigye and Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, with the military commander seeking the dismissal of a case that challenges controversial statements allegedly made about Besigye's fate.

The application before the High Court has quickly become one of the most closely watched legal battles in the country, not because of the treason charges facing Besigye, but because of broader constitutional questions surrounding fair trial rights, public commentary by powerful state officials, and judicial independence.

Through affidavits filed by military officers, Gen. Muhoozi and his co-respondents are asking Justice Emmanuel Baguma to dismiss the case with costs, arguing that the claims raised by Besigye and his co-applicant, Hajj Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya, are speculative and unsupported by evidence.
